If you have not used your Caravan or Motorhome for a long period of time, it is a great idea to clean your water tanks and plumbing system!
This will help prevent growth of harmful bacteria and algae, and ensure your water is clean for the next trip away.
Drain and Flush
The first step is to drain the water tank to remove any stale or contaminated water. Newer vans have a drain point fitted near the tanks. If not, it’s easy enough to remove the water inlet hose from the tank.
Fill the tank up again with clean water ready to flush through the system. Ensure the water pump is switched on and individually open all internal and external water outlets allowing the clean water to be pumped through until the tank is empty. This will assist to remove sediment, odour or taste that may have settled in the plumbing system.
Clean
Now add your choice of cleaner. We recommend using RV Tank Cleaner. It is non-toxic and easy to use. Follow the instructions as provided by the manufacturer.
Finally, fill, flush and drain the system one last time.
Now your water system should be clean and ready to fill with nice fresh water for your trip!
NOTE: Ensure you replace your water filter cartridge after cleaning your tank.
Feeder Hose
We recommend using a drinking water grade hose such as the Explore Flat Drinking Hose. A normal garden hose will taint the taste of your water – keep that one for washing your van!
TIP: Keep your hose stored out of the sun to prevent additional UV damage.
Water Filters
A water filter is a great addition to your van, helping to remove heavy metals, bacteria and viruses so your water is safe to drink.
Many Jayco vans have a Shurflo Water Guard Filtration System fitted. This does have a disposable cartridge that will need to be changed periodically.
Another filtration option is the BEST water filter. This can be attached to your hose as you fill your tank and is very affordable.
